Omniverse tapestry

In March 2016 I worked in the TextileLab in Tilburg to start a new series of Jacquard woven tapestries. Three days of intensive thinking and test runs were spent to come to the final decisions for the choice of types of wool, the colors, to achieve the intended tension between front and back, the tension between the dimensions, the voltage between 2D and 3D. The end result is highly satisfying, living proof of the potential of Jacquard weaving for emotive works of art using industrial techniques. I call it a form of machining emotion. The tapestries are direct translations of my acrylic paintings, yet using different materials with different characteristics. Especially I did put much effort in recapturing the transparency effect which gives so much depth to the original acrylic paintings. The transparency was successfully recreated using Jacquard weaving, but in a different form, whereas the visual tension between being in front and being in the background works more explicitly.
