The Rotary
The sculpture as commissioned by the Rotterdam Rotary Club describes a continuous rotating movement that knows three points of relative slow motion. In these 3 points the sculpture gains weight, along the in between edges the sculpture is stretched as if elastic homogeneous material, like chewing gum. The three stretches have three distinct characteristics, straightened at the bottom, arched at the top and bent at the side. The Rotary sculpture is placed right at the edge of the lake of Hillegersberg in Rotterdam. The sculpture is designed and dimensioned such as to be used functionally, one can sit on the lower part, one can look through it and frame the view towards the lake, one can jump through the hole and splash in the lake. The piece of art is coated in two contrasting colours, as to make the work appear slimmer and longer. A LED light is built into the upper part and lights up the light green coating at night time, thus attracting attentions from a far distance. The Rotary sculpture is CNC produced from dense EPS foam, and finished with a strong industrial polyurea coating. Interior to the EPS foam shape is a steel frame that guarantees a solid connection to the ground. The sculpture is slightly lifted from the ground, as if balancing on the edge of the lake.
